OTHER EFFORTS

At Scuba Dogs we are fighting in different ways to conserve the environment, not only cleaning beaches. It is important to promote healthy ways that help the environment to gain the lost ground.

Between these fights, is the Senate of Puerto Rico Project #623 to create a Submarine Park. They propose, through this project, to submerge boats to create artificial reefs that offer economic, commercial, recreational, educative and environmental benefits. There is already the famous program "Ships 2 Reefs", which has obtained the successful sink several boats around the word. The only place left implement it is here. You can find more information in http://www.ships2reefs.com/ . If you are interested to help us with this or another environmental project, you can contact to us at dive@scubadogs.net.

Another important project is the one of the coastal reforestation. Due to factors of excessive development and contamination, our coasts have lost thousands of trees that, besides of generating oxygen, conserve the suitable temperature and providing shade to us, they protect us of hurricanes and nature events that can damage us. For such reason, we promote the reforestation in the coast, in the city and in mountains. Only in the beach cleanings that we have made, we have seeded trees in the coasts of Puerto Rico and gave away trees. In order to learn more on the coastal reforestation and the local efforts like the government project "Verdor 100 X 35" (“100 X 35 Green”), to seed 4 million trees in next the 4 years, visit their website http://www.ceducapr.com/ .

Another important project is the one to install waste containers. In 300 beaches of Puerto Rico we terribly lack of waste receptacles to deposit the trash and sometimes the defective service to remove the garbage so that it does not return to the beach. If the beach visitors do not have receptacles to deposit the garbage, unfortunately often they leave it in the beach instead of taking it back home. For that reason we aggressively promote the installation of more waste containers. The last effort in which we were involved was the installation of 10 waste containers on Puerto Nuevo’s Beach at Vega Baja in the International Coastal Cleanup Day. Also, in the donation of 75 waste containers to the National Parks Company and 25 to the Municipality of Loíza as part of Coors Doing Ambient to take care of this problem. Thus, little by little, we can reach the goal of not only cleaning beaches, but conserving them clean as well.

In addition, periodically we carried out Educative Discussions in different forums to educate and to carry a constructive message in regards to the environmental conservation. Between most recent, stands out the one at Plaza las Americas, Perpetuo Socorro School, and in special, the Forum of Conservation of Coors Doing Ambient with the outstanding environmentalist Jean-Michel Cousteau, son of the famous Jaques-Ives Cousteau, father of diving and famous environmental educator.

Weekly also we organized echo-tourism excursions where we explore reefs diving, doing snorkeling and enjoying the beach. We visit exotic destinies like Desecheo, Caja de Muerto (“Coffin Island”), Culebra and Mona. For example, recently we made a trip to the Piñero Key in the west coast of Puerto Rico, where the environmental group Green Conscience of the Marista School learned about the mangrove and coral seeding that is being made in the small island, while we enjoyed a tremendous boat trip day.

Finally, among other efforts that we promote, we made Fish Census. Scuba Dogs is an official station of program REEF and offers different trainings for fish identification. Through our courses, we made counts of the different species that inhabit our reefs and we shared the discoveries of variety and density of population with the organization REEF, who tabulates and analyzes this information globally. This way, we learn about our reefs conditions and the diversity of marine species to support the scientific community and to better protect our marine resources. To learn more about the fish census that we make, visit the REEF website http://www.reef.org
