60% of the waste in beaches comes from activities on earth. From this, a great part arrives at the bottom of the sea from pluvial systems, rains, winds and run-offs. Although government agencies like Natural Resources, National Parks and the Municipalities clean the coasts periodically, the marine bottom where a great amount of trash is accumulated hurting therefore the marine life and corals is almost never cleaned.
This is why we sent ourselves to direct this new effort of environmental conservation focused mainly on cleaning the marine bottom. The plan is to join efforts with all the groups that enjoy our precious beaches; including divers, snorkelers, kayakers, surfers and swimmers in general. In addition, government agencies, private companies and near communities that have a genuine interest in preserving clean beaches.
The creative concept of “Fishing the Waste Fish Tournament” is born of the interest to excite enthusiastic environmentalists, as much as lovers of aquatic sports like fishers. The only detail is that, instead of fishing groupers, snappers and grunts, we will be fishing the Can Fish, Rubber Fish, Bottle Fish and Butt Fish, among others. Which is the prize? Simple; A healthy and clean beach!
The second effort of marine cleaning will be this next Saturday July 1stin the Cerro Gordo Beach from 8am to 12pm. All the participant volunteers must be there at 8am to register themselves, receive the materials and to fill their respective data cards. Then we will make a giant circle by holding hands, we thank the Lord and we dedicate the effort of this day to His creation. Interested persons and groups can inscribe by calling Scuba Dogs at 787-783-6377, e-mail a: pezbasura@scubadogs.net , or at Scuba Dogs Shop
We share the cleaning plan with all the gathered groups. Divers will clean the deepest areas. Kayakers and surfers will be on the surface to receive the waste and transport it to shore. Snorkelers will be gathering the trash from more shallow areas, where most of the waste is accumulated. Swimmers and other volunteers will be cleaning the coast outside, helping to receive the trash of the marine bottom and counting the litter retired from the beach.
With the distributed materials, we start looking for "waste fishes" acting like good environmental enthusiasts. We worked as a team to accomplish our mission leaving the beach clean as possible until 11am. By this time, we meet again in the tents located in the meeting point. We make a final count of waste and celebrate a closing ceremony where we show with pride all the fishing of waste fish that we removed from the beach. This waste is deposited in National Parks containers and we take advantage of the day o enjoy a clean and healthful beach.
